Granite vs Quartz

Granite Countertops

Granite is a natural rock which is cut and polished to use in many homes. Granite is resistant to chipping, scratching and cracking when properly installed. Due to the hardness, granite countertops are also heat resistant. When properly sealed granite counters will resist staining and bacteria.

Clean up is easy using mild soap and water or a cleaner designed for granite. Granite has only slight variation in the hue of the stone. Colors range from earth tones to blues, greens and roses.  Because it is a natural stone, each piece does vary.  Natural granite counters produce fewer carbon emissions making them an ecofriendly building material.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are a manufactured product which consists of crushed quartz and resin. Quartz has the same durability as granite, but it’s a bit more forgiving. Having a non-porous surface makes it resistant to growing bacteria and stains. However, quartz is not as heat resistant as granite.

Quartz countertops are more consistent then granite and are available in a wider array of color choices. Quartz doesn’t require the maintenance of granite due to it’s non-porous surface as it never needs to be sealed. When it comes to durability, quartz (engineered stone) has the advantage over granite.
